Mathmatics

Math beginnning

I looked through the math workbooks and they are too advanced and it’s just too much time sitting between writting and math, so here is what I have come up with to teach Isabella math:
Generally what they are looking for in preschool math is: number
recognition that correlates to units, patterns, shapes, and sorting. I
have found the following aids to help teach her these things: flash
cards (five umbrellas on one side and the number five on the other)
($9), See and Solve Manipulation Kit ($50), Velcro cloth calendar ($30),
number magnets ($4). In addition to using the aids, I have glass jars of
beads, shapes, pompom balls…I plan to use these for counting and sorting. Isabella
enjoys playing HI HO Cherrio and other counting/dice games, but they
don’t make the connection to the “symbol” of the number, so I made up
the following games:

Find the castle/treasure:
I print 30 8.5 x 11 pieces of paper. Each with a number starting at 0
-30. I place them in a line to the castle/treasure or all over the house
if we are truly treasure hunting. I have a box of pieces of paper with
0-30 things (circles, princess dresses, gold coins). She picks a piece
of paper from the box and finds the correlating number to match the
things. Once she picks the number 30 (or whatever number we decide is
the end number) she “wins” and gets the treat/prize in the
castle/treasure. I can modify the game for time and only put 5-10 pieces
of paper in the box at a time so she doesn’t get bored.

Shape Post Office:
I make ten envelopes with the following names on each:
Triangle, square, circle, rectangle, trapezoid, pentagon, hexagon,
octagon, star, oval She has a box or pile of little shapes cut out from
construction paper and I post larger versions of the shapes around the
house or room. I have Michael deliver the envelop to her and tell her
the name of the shape, she has to put the right shape in the envelop and
“deliver” it to the corresponding shape. I like this game because it has
potential to involve Michael more. She can direct him to the right
delivery or show him which shape to put in the envelope, but at this
point he just delivers the envelope to her.

The See and Solve Manipulation Kit is also something Michael can help
her with. It has wooden circles that fit on pegs and can be strung
through strings for necklace patterning and wooden blocks with numbers
and symbols. I’m thinking he can put the circles on the pegs and she can
count them and assign the correct number.

The calendar takes about one minute each day. She has to put the day,
the number date, the year, the month, the season, and the weather on it,
which she chooses from felt/cotton velcro backed options.

My thought is that we will spend about 20 minutes a day on math.
Alternate between playing games/ sorting jars/ the kit/ So I’m thinking
it will look something like:
